Mandee Johnson Shoots Super Serious Laughs

Date: May 17th, 2012 | By:

When I think of people I really admire and who I consider successful and talented, one thing that always stands out in each is that they have somehow created a niche for themselves and are doing exactly what they want to do. Mandee Johnson is a perfect example of this. As a young adult, Mandee followed her love for photography to California. She eventually mixed her love for photography with her love for comedy, partnering with CleftClips and co-creating Los Angeles’ best and much loved all-in-one monthly comedy event, The Super Serious Show. This has resulted in a series of photographs simply titled ‘Laugh‘. The Polaroid style and completely unique color tone of these photos are unreal. Mandee’s portraits of comedians and performers have a look that she has firmly created as her own. When you see one of her photos you don’t need to see a photo credit to know who it was shot by. You can’t get to that level as a photographer without having super serious talent, and Mandee’s skills are legit. Continue reading for an interview with Mandee and some of our favorite shots that will no doubt make you smile.

Shake Shake Shake

Date: May 15th, 2012 | By:

Maybe you’ve seen these before, as dog portraits of this cute-caliber spread across the Internet faster than you can comment LOL. Carli Davidson is a nationally recognized fine art pet photographer currently working out of Portland Oregon. Her love of both art and animals led her to work as an animal care technician and photographer for the Oregon Zoo, as well as a volunteer photographer for local animal rescues. “Animals are my people. They’re honest, loving, food-motivated, and do totally gross things on a regular basis. I spend much of my time rolling on the ground with whatever animal I’m working with, getting in their skin as much as possible, and encouraging them to open up to the camera just like one would with any model.” Fingers crossed she keeps rolling.

Jan Smith | Yellow Cake

Date: Apr 26th, 2012 | By:

Jan Smith (an SO favorite) has been recently working (i.e.: creating stunning art) in Chernobyl. We were lucky enough to catch up with him on today’s year anniversary to talk about his project Yellow Cake. This is what he said. ”When I was working in Chernobyl on two personal art and photography projects, I was immediately aware of the graffiti that decorates many of the buildings. Many of the pieces have a bitter-sweet essence to them that goes well with the empty buildings and the tragic history of the place. It is very apparent that the graffiti was meant as a tribute to the former inhabitants and a statement against nuclear energy. Some pieces decorate entire facades and are very noticeable, but others are hidden in hallways and rooms. Finding them became a treasure hunt game for me that helped lighten the mood of daily work. Time and weather are taking their toll on many of the pieces because they are beginning to fade or the walls they are on are crumbling. I decided to record as many of these pieces as possible both in tribute to the artists who made them, and as a historical record of sorts. I decided to call this collection Yellow Cake in reference to the powder that is extracted from uranium and used for nuclear power.” Amazing.

Photo Submission: Casey David

Date: Apr 20th, 2012 | By:

There’s beauty in Alabama, and photographer Casey David will prove it to you. His goal is to make “magic a reality”, something you can see in most of his shots. He also lived by one of my favorite philosophies, saying “I believe in only putting out into the world what you want back”. He uses a Canon T2i, 50mm 1.4 to shoot the things that inspire him: the cracks of skin, the folds of fabric, and the paper of old books. Check out more of his work after the jump.

Youthful Skills: Photographer Jessica Boutte

Date: Apr 16th, 2012 | By:

Jessica Boutte grew up in Rappahannock, which is a small county in western Virginia known for it’s beautiful scenery and total lack of things to do. About a year ago she picked up a camera for the first time with the notion that she could ‘create’ a photo instead of just taking one. Since then Jessica has been working on some seriously good conceptual compositions. AFTER. ONLY. ONE. YEAR. (She’s got those good notion genes.) Her inspirations come from books and also by her contemporary photographers that she met through Flickr. (Thanks Flickr!) Jessica describes her process: “Whenever an idea comes to mind, I draw out a quick thumbnail in my sketchbook of what I’m thinking- but never too specific because I like the spontaneity each model brings to the camera. Then I gather my props, costumes and head out to shoot- where I’ll take ‘expansion’ photos to create a landscape later on in PS (photoshop).” It will be super exciting to watch her career progress. She no doubt has that “eye” and mindset that is few and far between, and she didn’t even no it until last year. Check out more of her work after the jump.
