Ilana Glazer Is ‘Chronic Gamer Girl’

If you know Serial Optimist like I hope you do, then you know we have big time love for Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. It’s been two years since we first met and SO did a brief write up on their “Broad City” web series. Two years later they are in the middle of table reads, writing, and getting all executive produced by Amy Poehler for the web series that is soon to be a Comedy Central show. They also dominate at UCBTNY on the regular. But enough about the both of them. This is all about Ilana Glazer and her crazy weird strange awesome web series “Chronic Gamer Girl“. Ilana goes from weird accents to reviewing rules of the game to eating something to going off on four-second rants to yes, she has to be stoned. Right? Has to be. But I have so much love for Ilana I would totally believe that she isn’t, because she really is just that sporadic and off the wall and crazy in the best kind of way. We sat down and talked with Ilana about the series and other things that will make you smile.

Serial Optimist: Where did the idea come from?

Ilana Glazer: The idea comes from a longer video of me playing Mario, a 10-minute video; I did a year or two ago. Probably two years ago now — yikes! It was directed by the director of the series, Alex Charak. Then we just let it go for a bit. I called him up in the summer and said, “Remember that stupid video we made? Want to make a web series out of it?” And Alex is all comedy all the time, game for anything, which makes for the most fun. So he was down, and we started making it.

SO: What’s the ultimate snack?

Ilana: The ultimate snack is a poo poo platter of a variety of sweet and, separately, salty snacks. I like healthy, real food, so my true preferences are probably the least funny over what I’ll eat just for the show. But my fav munchies are prob like a nut mix with some raisins, chocolate Almond milk, fucking delicious Whittington’s Spicy Turkey Jerky from this place I once got jerky in Texas, those Jew pickles, and Trader Joe’s miscellaneous fruit “leather” collection, Ends N Pieces.

SO: What’s your favorite game?

Ilana: Favorite game is Mario Bros, 1, 3 and Super. I’m involuntarily really good at it. I wish I could just play Mario over and over for every episode.

SO: Costanza’s ultimate dream was eating while having sex. Would your ultimate dream be munching while having sex while playing video games?

Ilana: Hm, George Costanza’s fantasy is pretty disgusting to me. My ultimate fantasy would be to have sex with 2 really, really, really fucking hot-ass dudes at the same time. Food and video games can be done simultaneously, though. I mean, obviously.

SO: How dare you disrespect the ultimate satisfactions of George Costanza!Tell me more general shit that we should all know about!

Ilana: Just want to make you aware of our second channel “Chronic Gamer Girl: 2nd Channel“ which basically has second parts to each episode.

More? General shit: I really like art/comedy where you can just hang out, when it’s not such a monumental thing and is just whatever. I like ‘whatever.’ That’s life, I think! Another way of looking at it is that TV and movies and videos’ purpose is to be a temporary friend to someone who is lonely. I’ve been the person wanting or consuming that type of material, so it feels right for me to make it.

SO: Spot on, love it. Keep it gangster as always and thanks!
