Comedian, actor, writer, multitasker, and bona fide GANGSTER T.J. Miller put out one of the most entertaining albums of last year in The Extended Play E.P., and now we get a stellar, David Green directed video to accompany the track “T.J. Miller”. It’s stylish, funny, different, and everything you’ve come to expect from Miller, and at this point we should be expecting nothing but original creativity from his consistent contributions to multiple entertainment platforms. We chatted with T.J. about the video, collaborating with David Green, and panties, obviously.

Serial Optimist: You had so many great songs to choose from “The Extended Play E.P.”, what made “T.J. Miller” the song you made a video for?

T.J. Miller: I mean, it was the longest and most self indulgent, and so it needed a music video to match that audacity. Also, I made a bunch of videos you OL’ GOOSE! tjmillerdoesnothaveawebsite.com/hotstack to see them all! What a fantastic waste of money!

SO: The awesome David Green directed “T.J. Miller”. Did you all come up with the concept together? How did style and look of the shot come about?

T.J.: I had wanted to work with David Green for several years, but they were 2003, 2006 and 1999.  And we hadn’t met then, so we weren’t able to. But then we met, and so I asked him to do this video because I love his work like a brother you haven’t seen in a while, and he agreed. He pitched the idea to have other people transitioning in and out because we’re all T.J. Miller in a way, scared and alone, hoping to be supremely confident about always being second best. And he made the look and style of it, and then I came in and gave him terrible notes.

SO: The video begins with what is a little shout out to Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino’s “Freaks and Geeks” music video. Was that on purpose, an actually head nod, or just having a little fun at his expense?

T.J.: Always remember this: Everything is a homage.

Also, what the fuck does homage mean? I mean people are always sayin’ it around town and on busses and such, but no one never defiiinnneesss it. She doggy!

SO: You’re gonna make the panties drop with those dance moves. So be prepared to pick up lots of panties.

T.J.: I usually wear 3 or 4 pairs, all lace and all 2 sizes too big, so when I dance, the lace oversized panties I wear drop to the ground around my own feet, constant reminders that I own panties, and get a lot of pussy comparatively to other guys who own panties.

SO: Any more videos to come from the album?

T.J.: I don’t want to make any promises, but the weirdest craziest one yet might be the video for “Denver” which is forthcoming. Then that’s it. I’m done making fun of all this for a while. I’m busy silk screening pictures of my face on soup cans.
