As the Best Of lists start to come to an end, and there were plenty to waste hours of time going over, as we all do each December, one song that continually popped up on most Best Of lists was A$AP Rocky’s “Goldie“. We at SO even included it, it’s a great track, and was one of the best rap… no tracks, of 2012. But then I decided to dissect it a little more, and see what made this song so good. What I realized is that it might be one of the best hip hop songs lyrically in years. Almost to the point of perfection. If it weren’t for a few overly used lines that pop up in most hip hop songs these days, it would be a perfect 10. It can hang out in the area of Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, the best rap album of all time, and hold the same pen Kanye did with College Dropout. So let’s break “Goldie” down, and I’ll let A$AP’s lyrics speak for themselves.
THE HOOK: PERFECTION?
I said it must be cause a nigga got dough/Extraordinary swag and a mouth full of gold/Hoes at my shows they be stripping off they clothes/And them college girls write a nigga name on they toes/Niggas talk shit ’til they get lockjaw/Chrome to ya dome ’til ya get glockjaw/Party like a cowboy or a rockstar/Everybody play the tough guy ’til shit pop off
Two lines put the hook to this song on a different level:
Niggas talk shit ’til they get lockjaw/Chrome to ya dome ’til ya get glockjaw
Everybody play the tough guy ’til shit pop off
But it’s the way the whole hook is put together that makes it flow in a dirty, non-cliche in your face lines.
Let’s take it to the basics, you in the midst of greatness/My Martin was a Maison, rocked Margiela with no laces/Cristal go by the cases, wait hold up that was racist/I would prefer the Aces, ain’t no different when you taste it/A 40 ounce to chase it, that’s just an understatement/I’m early to the party but my ‘Rari is the latest/Somehow it seems girls in they late teens/remind me your favorite jeans cause they naked cause you famous/Life’s a mothafucka, ain’t it?/These other rappers anus/So tell me what your name is,/I’mma tell it to my stainless/You aim it for you bang it let that banger leave you brainless/It’s just me, myself and I and mothafuckas that I came with/Miscellaneous, niggas wanna hate on me Until I tell ‘em to they face they ain’t no GLow key/niggas mad cause I’m smooth puffing Zig ZagsTell ‘em quit the riff raff bitching with your bitch ass
Three Lines Make Verse One Instantly Stand Out:
Cristal go by the cases, wait hold up that was racist/I would prefer the Aces, ain’t no different when you taste it
I love that he laughs at the constant Cristal reference you here in every other song, asking if it’s racist.
These other rappers anus
He used “anus” as a diss. Enough said, and I don’t think has ever been said before.
niggas mad cause I’m smooth puffing Zig ZagsTell ‘em quit the riff raff bitching with your bitch ass
This is the best line of the song. It’s so chill, so perfectly worded, and so “just let me be me”.
Yes, I’m the shit, tell me do it stink?/It feel good waking up to money in the bink/Three model bitches, cocaine on the sink/And I’m so ’bout it ’bout it, I might roll up in a tink/Cause my chain came from Cuba, got a lock up on the link/And them red bottom loafers just to compliment the mink/Eyes chink, rolling up that dank,/blowing on that stank What you mean?/Tell me what you drink, I’m on that kissing pink/You could call me Billy Gates, got a crib in every state/Man on the moon, got a condo out in space/Open up your legs, tell me how it taste/And them niggas talking shit so tell ‘em,/”Tell it to my face/”Tell that bitch, hop up on my dick, rolled up on her quick/In a six, told her suck the dick, motorboat her tits/I’m the shit, niggas mad cause I’m smooth puffing Zig ZagsTell ‘em quit the riff raff bitching with your bitch ass
This is where things get a little “for the video” and “I’m coming up hard”. But I find it pretty humorous. I think he plays this dirty hard rapper as a role, and no doubt he’s serious about being a major player, and you can tell he’s serious when he changes “bank” to “bink” and “tank” to “tink” which shouldn’t work but does so well.
So is A$AP Rocky making a strong name for himself? I think the first line of this verse sums it up: Yes, I’m the shit, tell me do it stink?
