I don’t have the words to express my thoughts on combating gun violence. Better minds and better organizations are here for that. The sadness we have all felt now, multiple times, for years, makes me speechless and numb. What I can express are resources. It can be overwhelming trying to find out where to start in this battle, or if the battle can even be won. It’s difficult to know how you as an individual can help. The emotions we are feeling are so strong it’s hard to not SCREAM WRITE an op-ed on the issue. The best thing we can do is focus that rage into positive action. Standing up, staying up, speaking truth, contacting our Representatives, getting involved, educating ourselves, and not stopping until real change has been made.

Everytown for Gun Safety is where to start. They will guide you on actions you can take to prevent gun violence. From the commitment to save lives, calling your Senator, calling Congress, and finding events in your area.

Doing this is supremely easy. You will get an instant text back, to which you respond with the text: CALL. They will connect you to a voicemail that explains exactly what this bill means and exactly how to word your opposition to your Representative. You can even write it down if that helps, (they repeat it and I’ll paste it below). They will then connect you right away to your Representative. It takes maybe two minutes at most.

Dear Representative,

As a constituent concerned with the safety of my family and community, I urge you to please remove the gun silencers provision from the SHARE Act.

The distinctive sounds of gunshots allow bystanders and law enforcement to react quickly in emergency situations. But gun silencers distort those sounds — and that can make shootings even more dangerous. The gun silencers provision of the SHARE Act would make it easier for felons, domestic abusers, and people with dangerous mental illnesses to buy gun silencers. It would throw out existing federal public safety laws and enable criminals to buy gun silencers without a background check, simply by buying from anyone who is not a gun dealer.

This bill puts the profits of gun manufacturers ahead of public safety. We know that during active and mass shooting situations, hearing gunshots can mean the difference between life and death. Protecting communities and law enforcement is more important than gun company profits. So, please remove the gun silencers provision from the SHARE Act.

Today we mourn for Las Vegas, tomorrow we fight for them. Join the movement to end gun violence: Text ACT to 64433.

Everytown is a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities. Gun violence touches every town in America. For too long, change has been thwarted by the Washington gun lobby and by leaders who refuse to take common-sense steps that will save lives.

But something is changing. More than 3 million mayors, moms, cops, teachers, survivors, gun owners, and everyday Americans have come together to make their own communities safer. Together, we are fighting for the changes that we know will save lives.

Everytown starts with you, and it starts in your town.
